Redgate Smithy B&B We operate a baggage forwarding service for walkers if required! The best map locally is OS Explorer Map 109; Bodmin Moor (a perfect fit!). Recommended Local Walks There are many choices of walks that you can take, either direct from Redgate Smithy or after taking a short drive, that we can both recommend, and supply details and maps to guide you, during your stay. Golitha Falls
- St.Cleer and Trethevy Quoit - Siblyback Lake
- Two Valleys Walk You can either choose simply to go down to Golitha Falls, where there is much to explore, or to walk further afield up to Siblyback Lake and the lower areas of the Moor. A walk around Siblyback Lake itself is particularly pleasant, with much to see, and is one of our favourite walks! For an easy walk, our local village of St.Cleer is in easy walking distance, reached via a very pleasant wander down the lane, and up through Treworrick. There are fine views down the upper reaches of the East Looe river valley, and back towards the little hamlet of Redgate. St.Cleer has two good pubs (a good excuse for a walk, a drink, or meal!), and a fine parish church.
And don't forget our local long distance walk!... ...The Copper Trail (see separate page) A new long distance 60 mile circular walking trail around Bodmin Moor has been developed, together with a detailed colour guide book, by Blue Badge Guide Mark Camp, and published by Best of Bodmin Moor. Walking on Bodmin Moor For an excellent walking guide on Bodmin Moor, or for anywhere else in the area, then you need look no further than WalkaboutWest, run by Mark Camp, the above mentioned book author and Blue Badge Guide. From Siblyback, there is Open Access land leading directly up on to Bodmin Moor itself, or from nearby St.Neot, there is the excellent "Two Valleys Walk", that is based on the valleys of the River Loveny and the River Fowey, and the heights of Berry Down. There are also some very good local Walking Guides and information books available... why not order them from us before your visit?
If you take a short drive up onto the wide open spaces of the Moor itself, then parking at Minions is an excellent idea. Here there is easy access for exploring the whole of the south east area of the moor, and there are many good paths and old track-ways that can be followed, or you can explore new paths of your own - though watch out for pot-holes, pisky beds, and old mine pits! There is much Open Access land on Bodmin Moor, and there are many published walks in the area, both short and long. These include the Cheesewring, Gold Diggings Quarry, Sharp Tor, Bearah Tor, and Kilmar Tor. A word of warning though - Bodmin Moor is a beautiful place, but in inclement weather, it is very easy to get lost or disorientated, and all sensible precautions, maps and clothing should be taken with you. !!! Do let us know if you plan something adventurous, and when you plan to be back !!! Walking by the Sea Alternatively, there are of course some excellent walks on the coast, which is but a half hour's drive away. The South East coast of Cornwall is on the SW Coast Path, and there are plenty of excellent walks to be found on our local stretch, particularly between Looe, Polperro and Fowey! The "Hall Walk" around Fowey Harbour, Pont Pill and Bodinnick is also one of our favourites, or you could try Pencarrow Head and Lantic Bay, or the Coast Path between Polruan and Polperro, or just explore the smugglers' paths and tracks around Lansallos Cove. On a clear sunny day by the way, the nearest places to see the sea to us are just up the road at the site of King Doniert's Stone, or along the St.Cleer road, or the very fine views available from up on the moor! ~ |
