Redgate Smithy Bed and Breakfast

Land's End to John O'Groats... or anything a bit shorter!

We have had cyclists doing the Land's End to John O'Groats end-to-end bicycle ride stay with us a number of times (first stop from Land's End!), and we welcome anyone doing this trip, in either direction. You will be assured of nourishment and rest! But even if you are just planning shorter bike rides in the local area, or are touring the West Country by bike (or even by car and bike), you can rest your pedals here in comfort.

We have very good facilities for cyclists of all abilities, including a safe and secure storage area (and bike rack if required) in our garage for your bikes, your own key access, and a tiled porch area for any wet gear.

The Caradon Trail is new for 2014 and links the town of Liskeard with the beauty of Bodmin Moor. The Trail takes you along traditional Cornish lanes with their hedgerows and abundance of wildlife, and their sweeping views out across moorland and river valleys.

See the rich heritage of the area, from Neolithic megaliths to the remains of 19th century industrial mining landscapes. The Caradon trail is a signed double-loop on-road trail that covers some 17 miles.

The footpath around Siblyback Lake has been developed into an attractive cycle path that follows around the shoreline of the lake, over the dam, and through some lovely lakeside woodland, and passing the lakeside cafe for some hot or cold refreshments to keep you going. Cycle hire is also available.

See a wealth of wildlife, and watch the birds from a purpose built bird hide. The new cycle track also enables wheelchair access around the entire lake, and the complete circular trail covers an easy level 3 mile route.

There are tracks and trails all over the beautiful Cardinham Woods, for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. There is also the delightful Woods Cafe right there in the woods to sustain you!

There are three specially graded cycle trails for keen mountain bikers, from which you could choose the very aptly named "Bodmin Beast" (Moderate, and around 7.5 miles long, taking 1 to 2 hours). For the more capable, there is the "Hell's Teeth" (Difficult - it is a 1 mile track taking around 15 to 20 minutes), or there is the "Dialled-in Dave" route (also graded Difficult, at 0.5 miles, and apparently only taking 5 minutes! Apparently).

Camel Trail and the Camel estuaryThe Camel Trail

Download the Camel Trail Leaflet.

The Camel Trail is a 17 mile recreational route available for walkers, cyclists, and horse riders. It is very flat, as it follows mostly an old railway track bed, and is suitable for disabled access. It is deservedly Cornwall's most popular trail, and it passes through some very beautiful countryside, and alongside a spectacular river estuary. The Camel Trail was originally built in 1831 to transport sand inland to farms, and the railway was later added to transport slate and china clay from the quarries to the coast.

Bridge Bike HireBike hire is available from Bridge Bike Hire at Wadebridge and is an excellent place to base your experience of probably the most beautiful section of the Camel Trail between Wadebridge and Padstow. Alternatively, follow the Trail inland along the river to Bodmin or up through woodland to Wenford Bridge.
